Write the Vision: A Mission Statement That Shaped Our Homeschool

Preview

When I first began homeschooling, it was because I had a child who was struggling to learn, and the traditional path simply wasn’t serving her well.

Maybe you can relate. Do you have a child who is passed along to the next grade because they’re “good,” yet you know they’re missing foundational skills?

I remember feeling unsure of what the future would hold. Honestly, I was in a desperate place, overwhelmed and emotional.

Have you been there?

In the middle of that season, through tears, a seasoned homeschool mom encouraged me to write a simple mission statement. Not about grades or outcomes, but about the kind of adult I hoped my daughter would become. I wrote about character, responsibility, confidence, a love for learning, and a love for Jesus. That vision became our anchor. It shaped everything, the books we chose, the rhythms of our days - my entire educational philosophy!

By God’s grace, that season has passed, and I’ve had the privilege of watching her grow into a confident and capable young woman. Those hard days and faithful prayers produced more than I could have imagined. Today, she is dual enrolled in a vet tech program, stepping into responsibility with confidence. She passed her driving test on the first try and secured her first job after her very first interview. These are simply outward glimpses of an inward confidence, cultivated in an atmosphere rich in truth, beauty, and goodness.

Homeschooling is never just about academics. It’s about seeing the whole child, nurturing who they were created to be, and trusting that with clear purpose and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they will rise into it.

Proverbs 29:18 the King James Version says “Where there is no vision, the people perish...” The NIV is translated “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint…” The NLT says “When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild…” We need these things, a fresh vision, revelation and divine guidance for our children, given by the Holy Spirit. Oh, and that vision (mission statement), write it down.

Don’t run wild in this thing called home education, guide yourself with vision.
